DHS Investigates California’s Immigrant Cash Assistance Program for Possible Eligibility Violations

The Department of Homeland Security is investigating California’s Cash Assistance Program for Immigrants (CAPI) over concerns that benefits may have been given to individuals not legally eligible under federal law.

A federal subpoena requests detailed records from Los Angeles County’s social services from January 2021 onward, focusing on whether ineligible immigrants received aid meant only for lawful residents.

The investigation aims to ensure public benefits comply with immigration rules and prevent misuse of taxpayer funds.
