A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck off Alaska’s southern coast Tuesday, prompting a tsunami warning for parts of the state’s southern peninsula.
The quake hit around 4:30 p.m. EST, about 54 miles south of Sand Point, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. NOAA issued a tsunami warning, later downgraded to an advisory, for parts of the Alaska Peninsula.
Though the area is sparsely populated, it includes small coastal communities and the Alaska Peninsula National Wildlife Refuge.
“There’s no immediate damage, but we’re taking precautions,” a state emergency official said. Authorities remain on alert.
