The button placement on shirts—left for women, right for men—originated from class and practicality centuries ago. Upper-class women were dressed by maids, so left-side buttons made it easier for right-handed servants to fasten garments. The detail became a quiet symbol of wealth and femininity.
Men’s shirts, however, followed the needs of soldiers and right-handed swordsmen who kept weapons on their left side. Buttons on the right allowed quicker access and became linked with masculinity and readiness. Though times have changed, this small design choice still carries echoes of history, class, and tradition.
