Mull’s daughter Maggie shared on Instagram that her father passed away at home “after a valiant fight against a long illness.” Renowned for his exceptional creativity, Mull was known for his work on Red Roof Inn advertisements and his ability to make people laugh. He was adored by his family, friends, colleagues, fellow performers, and even a huge number of dogs.

Mull’s most famous roles included Leon Carp on Roseanne, Willard Kraft on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Gene Parmesean on Arrested Development. He earned an Emmy nomination in 2016 for his role as Bob Bradley on Veep and co-wrote the 1985 mockumentary The History of White People in America with Fred Willard. A comedy and songwriting enthusiast, he also influenced country music, inspiring Jane Morgan’s parody of A Boy Named Sue with her song A Girl Named Johnny Cash.
