Some Americans may still qualify for a stimulus check, according to the IRS, which recently announced that taxpayers who did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns have already begun receiving payments. The IRS stated that no action is needed for eligible taxpayers to receive these payments, and the deadline to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, worth up to $1,400, is April 15, 2025. To qualify, individuals must file their 2021 tax return before the cutoff date.
IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel explained in December that the IRS identified one million taxpayers who overlooked claiming this credit and to simplify the process, they are making these payments automatic, so eligible individuals won’t need to file an amended return. The Economic Impact Payments, issued during the COVID-19 pandemic, were designed to help people who were unable to work, with payments up to $1,400 depending on income. For individuals, the full amount is available with an adjusted gross income (AGI) of $75,000 or less, while the cap for married couples filing jointly is $150,000. Payments for dependents may also be eligible, with no age limit. To check if you qualify, visit IRS.gov.
