On May 8, 2025, white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel, signaling the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago as the new pope. He will be known as Pope Leo XIV, making history as the first American pontiff.

Pope Francis passed away on April 21 at the age of 88 following a stroke. After nine days of mourning, the conclave convened to choose his successor.

Cardinals, secluded from the outside world, voted in secret following centuries-old rituals. Black smoke signaled inconclusive votes; white smoke meant a decision had been reached. The tradition, dating back to 1274, emphasizes prayer, silence, and discernment.

Pope Leo XIV, born in Chicago in 1956, is a former Augustinian leader and bishop in Peru. Known for his commitment to education, healthcare, and pastoral outreach, he chose a papal name that honors past popes noted for defending the faith and championing social justice.

His election drew swift reactions worldwide. Donald Trump praised the historic moment on Truth Social, while Catholic communities celebrated and world leaders sent congratulations. Many hope the new pope will continue Pope Francis’s emphasis on the poor and the environment.

Looking ahead, Pope Leo XIV is expected to prioritize climate action, support for refugees, synodal governance, and revitalizing the Church in secular regions. His inauguration Mass is set for May 20, 2025.
