Brave mother hunted down 10 gang members involved in her daughter’s murder

The real-life story of Miriam Elizabeth Rodríguez Martínez bears a striking resemblance to the plot of Taken—a mother’s relentless pursuit of justice for her daughter, tragically killed by Mexico’s notorious Zeta Cartel.

After her 20-year-old daughter Karen was kidnapped and later found murdered in 2014, Miriam refused to let her killers walk free. Over the next three years, she transformed herself—changing her appearance, using disguises, and posing as different people—to infiltrate the world of those responsible.

Her determination led to the capture of 10 gang members. She tracked them through social media, befriended their relatives, and even held one suspect at gunpoint until police arrived. Her investigative efforts were instrumental in bringing several cartel members to justice.

Tragically, on Mother’s Day 2017, Miriam was assassinated outside her home, shot 12 times. Though her life was cut short, her bravery and fierce love left a lasting legacy. A bronze plaque now honors her memory in her hometown of San Fernando.
